Cassiel took in the picture once more. Her eyes still had that haunted look that always shook the very core of him. Alana always seemed to be looking past the camera, across oceans of time directly at him. He read the date on the back of the picture. It was a few short weeks before she was introduced to her newest set of horrors, the Ludlows.

The feeling started in the pit of his stomach, but it was already spreading through his blood like a virus. When it reached his heart, he began to quake inside. He grabbed the telephone and started dialing Mark’s number. He got down to the last digit and stopped.

If there had been another heist, Mark would have been calling him or he would be at the door pounding. Cass pressed the disconnect button and stood up. Something was wrong. Something was terribly wrong and he couldn’t put his finger on it. And it wasn’t like he could call one of the agents on the case because as friendly as they were, they had no qualms about reminding Cass and anybody else whose chaw it was. He’d forgone staking out Alana’s apartment that evening because he knew that if he so much as saw the curtain move he’d be out of his car and at her door. Holding her would have been out, but she’d find him sitting by her door when she came out to go to work. He wasn’t so sure she wouldn’t sic her lawyer on him for prying into her private life.

He heard the newspaper thump against his door and went to get it. The coffeemaker was already finished with the day’s first supply of inspiration. He poured himself a cup and flopped down in his chair. He took a sip, then winced. Something in his gut railed at the smell of the coffee and threatened to send the sip he had taken back. He pushed it aside and grabbed the newspaper. It slid out of the sack with a plop and he shook it open. He was thumbing his way back toward the Sports section when his eye fell on the picture of a diamond necklace resting on jeweler’s felt. Everything in him shut down.

He shook out the section and skimmed through it. Each sentence seemed to confirm what he already knew. He eyed Tracey’s keys on the table and thanked whatever gods sent her to him. Every year her company held its annual jewelry show and exhibit at one of the local universities. Security would be tight down there, but it wouldn’t make a difference. The jewels were already in the building. Alana would know that. Alana would know and she’d be waiting with whomever she worked with.

And when the place went dark, when the owners were sure the place was secure they would go out for a late, late dinner or early breakfast, thinking that their guards would take care of everything, Alana would come. They would take comfort in the fact that the jewels were insured for double their value.
